Enhancing Community Engagement in Ken Lake

Updated: Oct 9, 2025

Ken Lake has long been known for its strong sense of connection, neighborliness, and community pride. Our shared commitment to engagement ensures that every resident’s voice is heard and every neighbor feels part of shaping our collective future.

Open Communication and Transparency

When issues arise that affect the entire community—especially those that are significant budget items or sources of concern—the HOA Board should hold community “town hall” meetings. These gatherings allow residents to share their perspectives, ask questions, and help guide decisions with clarity and transparency. Open dialogue prevents confusion and strengthens trust between residents and the board.

Celebrating and Supporting Volunteers

Volunteers are the heartbeat of Ken Lake. Their time and dedication keep our neighborhood vibrant and well cared for. Volunteer opportunities should be highlighted regularly in board meetings, newsletters, and on the website, and volunteers should be recognized for their service year-round.

Each committee chair can play a role by sharing their group’s activities, inviting participation, and finding new ways to involve residents. A current list of standing committees, including their roles, mandates, and contact information, should be available on the website and in the newsletter.

Adopting and Stewarding Projects

Ken Lake has a proud tradition of hands-on volunteer groups who care for our common spaces and infrastructure. Residents are encouraged to adopt projects or areas to maintain and improve, following the example of:

  • The Mower Posse, who mow common area lawns throughout the warmer months.

  • The Urban Forest Angels, who have removed hundreds of pounds of invasive ivy.

  • The Geezer Squad, who have built and rebuilt floats for community events, saving the HOA thousands of dollars.

These examples show what’s possible when community spirit meets teamwork.

Encouraging Resident-Led Initiatives

We should continue to support and celebrate community-led projects—like the privately funded and installed Wildlife Pole at the Sports Park in 2022.Such initiatives showcase the creativity and generosity of our residents and enrich the character of our shared spaces.

Promoting Connection and Feedback

To keep residents informed and engaged, the Board should appoint a Community Engagement Coordinator—a board or community member responsible for encouraging communication, participation, and inclusivity.

Additionally, annual or biannual community questionnaires can provide valuable insights into resident priorities, concerns, and aspirations. These surveys should be managed by non-board members to ensure open, unbiased feedback on board governance and neighborhood needs.

Welcoming New Residents

The Newcomer Packet and Orientation Program are essential for helping new residents feel at home. These resources should be maintained and updated to include information about committees, volunteer opportunities, and upcoming events—inviting every new neighbor into the life of Ken Lake.

Building a Professional and Inclusive Board

Finally, the Board of Directors should continue developing a higher level of professionalism and training to ensure smooth, transparent operations. A well-functioning board encourages greater participation and helps residents feel confident about volunteering or running for office.

Looking Ahead

Community engagement is the foundation of Ken Lake’s success. By encouraging open communication, celebrating volunteers, and fostering inclusion, we ensure that every voice matters and every neighbor belongs.

Together, we can continue building a community that reflects the best of Ken Lake: collaborative, caring, and connected.
